Why Join SDFCU?

State Department Federal Credit Union Credit is a safe and dependable, not-for-profit financial services provider. As a members-owned financial institution, SDFCU answers only to its members and the financial wellbeing of SDFCU members is our priority. SDFCU serves members located all around the world.

What is the benefit of becoming a SDFCU member?

State Department Federal Credit Union (SDFCU) membership comes with access to low loan rates and high-yield savings, no fees checking, credit card rewards and many exclusive services.

Why should I join a credit union instead of a traditional bank?

Traditional banking institutions are in the business of making money for its stockholders, with the goal making a significant profit for that group every year.

Every SDFCU member is an owner, so any profit made by the credit union is returned to its members in the form of lower interest rates, lower fees, and higher saving deposit rates.

Is your money federally insured with SDFCU?

Yes. Your deposits are insured to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a U.S. government agency.

 

Eligibility

Who is eligible to become a SDFCU member?

There are many ways to qualify for SDFCU membership. For example, you can join through Department of State, association or select employee group affiliation, family relation, in addition to other eligibility options available. See how you can join.

Can I become a SDFCU member if I am self-employed? 

Yes, you can qualify through your relationship with an existing member or by joining the American Consumer Council (ACC). You will be guided through this in the application process.

Can I join SDFCU with a low credit score? 

SDFCU will access your credit report, but we do not use your credit score as a determining factor for membership approval.

What Information do I need to provide if I’m joining SDFCU through a family relationship?  

Please provide the existing members name and account number.

Can I still join SDFCU if I belong to another credit union?

Yes, you can join multiple Credit Unions if you meet the eligibility requirements.

 

Joining

Can I join SDFCU online?

Yes, you can join online! Start your online application now.

You can also start your application, save it, and finish it later if you don’t have the time to complete it in one session. An applicant has up to 14 days to provide the requested documentation needed complete your SDFCU membership application, such as proof of identity, birth, and residency. Once submitted, you can monitor the status of your application online.

What information is needed to join?

As part of the account verification process, Federal law requires us to obtain sufficient information to verify your identity. You may be asked several questions and to provide one or more forms of identification to fulfill this requirement. We may also use outside sources to confirm the information furnished.

Your information is protected by our privacy policy and federal law.

Items that can be used for Proof of Identity

  • State issued Driver’s License
  • State issued Identification Card
  • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
  • U.S. Alien Registration Card

Proof of Social Security Number
Social Security Number must show the full nine-digit.

  • Social Security Card
  • Form SSA-1099

Proof of Date of Birth:

  • State issued Driver’s License
  • State issued Identification Card
  • Original or certified copy of Birth Certificate
  • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
  • Valid Foreign Passport (for joint members only)

Proof of Residency

  • Deed/Deed of Trust
  • Mortgage statement (no more than 60 days old)
  • Real Estate Property Tax bill or Tax Assessment (current year)
  • Valid residential rental/lease agreement
  • Utility bill showing the same mailing and service address (no more than 60 days old)
  • Change of Address Card with a valid State issued Driver’s License or Identification card issued by the same
Can I open a SDFCU account if I live abroad?

Yes, SDFCU is one of the few credit unions in the United States which accepts members who live outside the country. SDFCU and American Citizens Abroad (ACA) have partnered to provide ACA members with a US Banking solution. ACA qualifies as an approved affiliate for SDFCU. Is there a minimum deposit required to become a member?

Not from you! SDFCU membership starts with a Savings (Share) Account. We require an initial minimum deposit of $1 into that Savings (Share) Account and we provide that dollar.

Can I join and get a loan at the same time online?

Yes, you can apply online to join and get one of our loan or deposit products! Visit the product page you would like to get and start an application.

Can I add a joint owner on the account?

Yes, SDFCU members can request the addition of a joint account owner.
