Hurricane Katrina - A Victim's Story When Janet Desvigne found herself displaced due to Hurricane Katrina, she turned to her daughter, Credit Union member, Cindy Rosales, who joined when she interned at the State Department. Janet's biggest financial concern was that she had no income and needed a checking account in order to receive government assistance for her and her family. Janet remembered the many times her daughter told her about the Credit Union and how she should join. On that recommendation, she opened an account at the Ft. McNair branch. "It was so nice for them to give me a reason to smile, in spite of everything." In fact, Janet was so impressed, that she brought her husband, Kenneth Desvigne, in a few days later to open a joint account. The Desvigne's were happy to know that they can continue to use the Credit Union when they get back home. They were able to locate two shared branch locations near their home in Louisiana. Kenneth offers this insight to others, "There's something positive in every situation. Thank God that you and other major players in your life got away with their lives. If you've got that, you've got all that you need. Everything else can be replaced. It could always be worse." He also offered suggestions to people who come in contact with victims of such tragedy. He advised that people do not say, "I know how you feel." Everyone deals with tragedies differently, and even if you've been through it, you still don't know how another person may feel. He recommends that people just say, "Keep your chin up. I'll be there for you." |
